I write to urge you to co-sponsor the Opioid Patients’ Right to Know Act(H1185), which incentivizes states to require a conversation between prescriber and patient to warn about addiction risks and discuss non-opioid pain relief alternatives at the time it is most needed--right before an opioid painkiller is prescribed. A Brandeis University study conducted in New Jersey, the first state to implement this requirement, documents that it’s significantly driving the number of new opioid prescriptions written, preventing dependence and addiction at the source.  <br><br>Eighteen states have adopted this common-sense measure, but that leaves 32 states without it.  With the increase in dependence, addiction and overdose deaths as a result of the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is especially important that we provide incentives to make sure every patient and parent has this vital, life-saving information. The Opioid Patients Right to Know Act will provide grant funding for safe prescribing education to states that add this requirement for a conversation between medical practitioner and patient or states that have already put it in place.<br><br>Please take an important step to combat the opioid epidemic and co-sponsor the Opioid Patients Right to Know Act (H1185)
